Apple Picking and Piglets

My girlfriend and I drove two hours out to the country yesterday to go apple picking and to see piglets race. The apple picking was a success, the fruits of which (har har) I shall be feasting on for the rest of the week. It was exactly as I hoped it would be--lush, forested country-side in very cold weather with friendly people milling about. Also a giant serving of apple pie drowning under a mound of vanilla ice cream.

Sadly, the piglet racing wasn’t up to snuff, with just two normal looking miniature pigs running most of a tiny loop before stopping terrified by the screaming of small children. To be fair, my disappointment was probably due in large part from giving ourselves an unattainable bar by watching YouTube (I love how Word was upset I didn’t capitalize the ‘t’ initially) videos of miniature potbelly pigs being adorable. Case in point below:

This of course led us down the slippery slope of related videos that soon had us watching other miniature pigs, cheetah cubs, hedgehogs and baby huskies. By the time we left for the orchard we had this impossible image of perfectly groomed tiny pigs being adorable just for us. I attempted to lessen my guilt and disappointment by feeding the two racing pigs some corn before I left.

On the way back I made my girlfriend play the soundtrack for Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me again, which I highly recommend you listen to if you get the chance (you can find it on Spotify). I heard it the first time back in January when we drove out to the Grand Canyon. Very funny stuff from an actor I didn’t really know that much about or particularly cared for before now. I would love for him to do another run though so I could see it live.
