The trip home went really well. I had time to do everything I wanted (i.e., relax and archive comics AND see everyone) and then some. My trip to go see my cousins in Virginia Beach ended up being a trip to Williamsburg, where we hit up Busch Gardens and their winter festival of lights.
It was really beautiful once it got dark and even though most of the rides were closed for the winter, their newest rollercoaster, Verbolten, was still open and was an absolute blast. It did something that I’ve never seen a rollercoaster do before and scared the living crap out of me when it happened. In the hopes that some of you (**cough**Dad**cough**) might actually get there some day and ride it I won’t reveal the surprise.
We also hit Colonial Williamsburg the next day and enjoyed the beautiful weather outside while learning a little bit about American history. Fun fact: don’t ever try breaking into the home of a Colonial Williamsburgian. They like their guns.
That evening we had dinner with my sister and I crashed at her place, the first time I had ever visited in the ten or so years that she’s lived there. It’s a lovely place and the dog pack was thrilled (i.e., neurotic) to see me.
The next day I caught up with an old college friend in Fredericksburg and watch the entire first season of the BBC’s Sherlock series, which I cannot recommend enough. It is "hella amazeballs," as a 20-something Northern Californian might say.
Then it was back up north for early birthday celebrations with my father, which included two different performances, "A Trip to the Moon" and "White Christmas," the former of which was easily the most innovative stage production I’ve ever seen. I’ll probably do a separate post just on that later this week. We also had some bad-ass kabobs at Kabob Palace in Arlington, VA. If you’re in the area you should definitely check them out.
Christmas Eve was spent with mom and we made a fantastic shepherd’s pie which was in a recent issue of Cook’s Illustrated. We ended up using waaaaaay to many potatoes, but I’m not about to complain. Nothing like hot mashed potatoes in the dead of winter. Also, Ben & Jerry’s limited Key Lime Pie ain’t too shabby either.
Christmas Day was spent with Dad and more cousins and featured my beloved Salmon Log, which my cousin Maureen introduced to me years ago. Imagine salmon, spinach and crème fraîche inside a delicious shell of puff pastry. Jealous? Of course you are.
The next day I left to go back west, but not before the Winter Gods were kind enough to drop some sleet and hail on me. Fortunately it switched over to rain before the plane took off so the flight was a smooth one.
Good lord, this "brief recap" has become anything but. Okay, the rest will be quick, I promise.
I flew back on the 26th, stayed up until 3am playing Terraria with my girlfriend and her brother, spent six hours in tech the next day before putting up the first of two performances of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson that night and then staying up until 3am again, because, why not? I slept in on the 28th, did the second and final performance of BBAJ and then had a show/birthday party afterwards and stayed up until 3am AGAIN. Did I mention I just turned 34? I’m getting too old for this. :P
I don’t even remember what I did that weekend, but I spent New Year’s Eve with my girlfriend and a bunch of the BBAJ cast. And the rest of last week was lost to a haze of laziness and computer games.
Wait! Lies! I was introduced to and watched all of season 2 of American Horror Story. AMAZEBALLS!
The End.
